Reed Estabrook is the prodigy of obsessed builder-gardeners. He was a less than an outstanding student throughout his pre-collegiate days and spent every vacation attending accelerated reading summer school. But he was really good at building things. He entered Rhode Island School of Design to study architecture but fell in with the wrong crowd and earned his BFA in Photography in 1969. In 1971 he earned a MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and found gainful employment at the University of Illinois.

Since 1974, when he left the Universities of Illinois to develop his first photography program, he has taught at the University of Northern Iowa; chaired the Photography Program at the Kansas City Art Institute and from 1984 to 94 served as the founding coordinated of the then new Program in Photography at San Jose State University. He spent a year on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange at Sheffield Polytechnic in Sheffield, England. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is represented in most public collections in the United States including the Museum of Modern Art - NYC, the Art Institute of Chicago, the J Paul Getty Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
