Dan Herrera joined the Photo Department as a lecturer at San Jose State University in 2015. His classes include Alternative Process Photography, Intermediate Digital Imaging, and Advanced Black & White Photography. Herrera also teaches Intermediate Photography, and Advanced Photography Materials at California State University, Sacramento.
His teaching experience also includes private alternative processes workshops and public lectures on his unique approach to image making, where he has been invited to speak at the F/295 Symposium at Carnegie Mellon, Open/Show San Francisco, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Herrera uses an elaborate means of image capture, composition, and output that merges 19th century printing techniques with contemporary photographic production. His work explores how the aesthetics of process are used as a means to absorb the viewer in a narrative both futuristic and nostalgic.
Dan’s work has been widely published in both art history textbooks and pop-culture literature including: The Book of Alternative Processes (3rd Edition, 2015 ) by Christopher James; Gum Printing: A Step-by-Step Manual, Highlighting Artists and Their Creative Practice by Christina Z. Anderson (1st Edition, 2016); Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age (3rd Edition, 2018) by Robert Hirsch, Juxtapoz Magazine (2009), F-Stop Magazine (2011), Submerge Magazine (2012), Diffusion Magazine (2012), Sacramento Magazine (2015), and Sactown Magazine (2016).
Herrera has a BFA in Photography from San Jose State University (2003), and an MFA from San Francisco State University (2012). His national exhibition record includes shows in New York, Los Angeles, and numerous Bay Area venues including the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art.
